D E M O S // cast our crowns

One of my great joys this year has been starting a songwriter’s group at the local church where I serve as worship director. My heart in this has been to encourage the release of the song-of-the-Lord in this season for our body and for our community. I was surprised to discover 15+ proficient & budding writers in our mid-sized church who were ready to run with this together! I truly believe there is a ‘new song’ rising in our midst, and this release of the song-of-the-Lord is about to be birthed as we continue to nurture this gift in one another. This sound clip of the chorus to ‘Cast Our Crowns’ is my early response to honor the Lord in what He is bringing forth in this new season of release.

D E M O S // the throne

I have been in an intensive season of listening and writing and I wanted to share a little bit of that process with you! This means that I will be sharing a few demos, a few songs-of-the-Lord that have been stirring in intensity over these last months, songs that will change & blossom as we ‘work them out’ with the gifts afforded to us. I am incredibly grateful to be in a season of life where I am able to really pour into writing, recording, and producing (which entails hours of listening, nurturing, faith, and boldness)! Here is a short write-up of this first demo I’m sharing this week.

2017 Message and Highlights

Julie in 2017 #1

Sing to the Lord a New Song! His praise from the ends of the earth!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It is with great joy and a full heart that I write this end-of-year blog post to you: my friends, family, supporters, and the myriad network of artists, musicians, worshipers, pastors, and teachers both local and abroad. I am so grateful for each and every one of you!

2017 was a year of going low and going local. After coming off of the mountaintop experience of the Night of Hope and Reconciliation: For the City, Through the Arts (2016), I felt a real call to pour into the artists and songwriters at the local church where I work part time as Worship Director (visit our new worship ministries website here)! I was surprised to discover 15+ proficient & budding writers in our mid-sized church (we are NOT your local megachurch!) who were ready to run with this together. My heart has been to encourage the release of the song-of-the-Lord in this season for our body and for our community. Be looking ahead for an upcoming night of “Songs Arising From The Church” in 2018 where we will celebrate the release of this new song!

2017 also brought the privilege of putting on two concerts with local artist Cari Shipp (flute) to benefit The Adult Learning Center of Charlottesville (a local organization where Cari volunteered) and also a fusion concert: SONOSYNTHESIS to benefit IMPACT CVILLE, a local organization that empowers the faith community to work together for justice in our region. Both of these concerts were a great success, SONOSYNTHESIS a sold out show! It was our honor to give generously to these two local organizations who are serving our community.

Christmas Song

Merry Christmas from our family to you! Please download and enjoy our “Christmas Song” that I wrote two years ago while pondering the themes of: the transcendent nature of God, the John 1:14 mystery “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us”, the John 8:12 mystery “I am the light of the world”, and ultimately God’s deep love for us which moves him to act for our good.

Tour 2015 "I'll Fly Away"

Julie Bernstein B&W band photo
One of my favorite days of tour was the day we were able to devote to recording songs and video together as a band. Going into the tour, I had planned one day to do some video work, but we were able to accomplish much more than I had initially planned! We recorded an acoustic version of one of Tucker’s songs from his new EP, an acoustic version of “Seal” (from my new album), an old hymn, “I’ll Fly Away,” (featuring Michael Coleman), and a video to “I’ll Fly Away” filmed on location in rural Illinois. We spent the morning recording tracks, an hour scouting barns, fields, and farm houses (for actually shooting the video), and then recorded video footage until we literally ran out of batteries! I hope you enjoy the finished video as much as we enjoyed making it! And stay tuned for Tucker's video and the acoustic version of Seal!

You Are My Joy album released!

I am so pleased to announce the release of You Are My Joy, available today on CD via my website, all online stores, and all streaming services! This album was created through a Kickstarter campaign I ran to support my previous release, Fire In The Night. Because the crowdfunding event earned double its expected amount, I was able to spend a good portion of this last year writing, recording, and producing another entire studio album! The songs on this album were influenced directly from scriptures I was studying this last year (Philippians 2, Psalm 116:7, Song of Solomon 8:5-7, Romans 8:35-39, Revelation 1:18, Hebrews 10:19, Psalm 71, John 4:23-24).

Merry Christmas 2014

Merry Christmas, friends!

Hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of 2014 and looking forward with anticipation to the New Year! I am wrapping up post production on my newest album and wanted to give you all a sneak peak into what we’ve been working on this year. Here’s a 30-second snippet from one of the new songs on the album (You Are My Joy). This excerpt references the scripture (Song of Solomon 8:5) that captures the posture of my heart & frame while writing this last year: “Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved?”

Enjoy this excerpt from "You Are My Joy!”

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, friends! It’s at this time of year that my heart exudes gratitude at every level, miraculously so, considering the tendencies and trends of the human heart. I want to honor you, my friends, fans, family, supporters, fellow musicians, worshipers by acknowledging how grateful I am for YOU and for your continued support of me both personally and financially through my Kickstarter campaign and in supporting my work at every level.

As I type, the first of the Kickstarter co-writes are being completed and all songs for my next album are in post-production. I am loving what I hear, thanks to a new level of freedom in writing & expression and the continued encouragement and creative genius of producer Kevin McNoldy. We are working hard to make these songs the best that they can be, and as we’ve collaborated back-and-forth, we’ve also decided to shift to an early 2015 album release. We’ll keep you posted as we get closer to the date!

We are also looking at planning tour dates for this spring and summer so contact me if you’d like me to come to a venue near you!

I will close with this from Romans: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Happy Thanksgiving 2014!

4th album is almost here!

I’m writing with a quick update on the progress of my 4th album which, thanks to a lot of Kickstarter love, I was able to write and record this year! I just handed all of the completed songs over to our producer last week so they are now in his hands to produce, mix, and master. We’re looking at a November release date …

To give you a glimpse of what to expect, this album finds me writing and recording from a place of greater healing and joy! The Lord has used the songwriting process to bring me into a greater understanding of His love and purposes. He’s given revelation & the illumination of His word as gifts along the way, and deep presence, which has been both life and joy to me!

Thank you for your continued support which has allowed me to continue growing as a musician, writer, recording artist, and worship leader.

Many, many thanks!

Julie's new 2014 album will be released soon

Album Update

Hello friends! Please forgive me for not having written in so long! I have been in the studio full time working on my next full studio album (thanks to my generous Kickstarter supporters who funded not only the 2nd part of Fire in the Night, but also my 2013 summer tour, AND this next full studio album!) I have learned so much since the creation-to-release of my first album that diving into this next project has been way less scary & intimidating and WAY MORE invigorating and engaging! I can honestly say that I cannot wait to bring these songs to you! They are steeped in truths of the unrelenting Love of God and our response to living a life completely dependent on Him & His presence … which is the best and safest place to be this side of eternity! New Christmas Song, free download

Our Gift to You!

In the spirit of giving this Christmas season, please accept my gift to YOU: a free download of my new Christmas Song, written and recorded with my family just a couple weeks ago!

This recording was especially fun for me because we worked on it together as a family: My son on guitar, my daughter on violin & bells, and me on keys & drum. My husband recorded us the day before Thanksgiving when we should have been baking pies and packing for our vacation! But when inspiration hits, I’ve learned to respond! (This inspiration just happened to come upon us the day before a major family road trip). I submitted the song to our producer, Kevin McNoldy, on Thanksgiving night and he worked through his vacation mixing and mastering in order to bring this music to you for your Advent & Christmas celebrations. Kickstarter campaign-stretch goal

We're now drawing very close to achieving our Kickstarter stretch goal of $12,000! Thank you again to everyone who has contributed to the campaign… I am so very thankful for your support!

To anyone who has thought about purchasing my music, or given Out of the Deep a listen on my lyric video, this "stretch goal" on Kickstarter has been set to go beyond anything listed in the Thank You packages you receive for your contribution. If we reach this new goal with your help, it will enable me to record ANOTHER studio album after Fire In The Night, which is what the initial campaign was for (along with the accompanying tour in July). This extra album would be sent to contributors FOR FREE around the end of the year!

The basic Fire In The Night 12-song CD (parts 1 and 2 combined) is the reward for a contribution of $15, with larger packages available that include my other albums Out Of The Deep and Awaken Me. If we reach the new goal, that same $15 pledge will now include this second album of 12 songs. So, $15 gets you two albums instead of one, with no extra charges for shipping. That's a huge savings off of what these albums would cost online after this campaign, since they're priced at $12 each, plus shipping.

If enough people choose this $15 contribution, we can reach the goal before the campaign ends this Sunday night. Please share this blog post or my campaign with anyone you can think of--anyone who is interested in my music, or even someone who likes to get a bargain with 2 CDs for the price of 1! Every share can get us that much closer to achieving the stretch goal.

I'll have my July tour dates posted shortly… everything is ready to go! I'm so excited for the tour, and the upcoming album(s)! Thanks again to everyone for your support.

Kickstarter campaign update

I'm so excited to announce that my Kickstarter campaign exceeded the initial goal of $8000, which is such an incredible blessing!  With your support, everything has come together in only two weeks.  I'm looking forward to sending out the thank you packages that people have signed up for via their contributions (CDs, listening party invitations, and I have many people who chose the package where they co-write a song with me!).

Since the 100% funding was reached before the campaign ends, the opportunity has opened up for me to set a "stretch goal" on Kickstarter.  The means we've now set the goal to reach $12,000 before the campaign finishes this coming Sunday night (we're very close already!).  In addition to the thank you packages everyone will be receiving, if we achieve this goal, I will be able to fund a new full studio album outside of Fire In The Night 2, and this new project will be sent to any contributors FOR FREE when it is finished later this year.  To everyone who has contributed so far, you will receive double what you expected, and to anyone who contributes now, you'll be getting a lot more than we initially listed!

I am so thankful for everyone's support, and I've received the most incredible responses from contributors and people who have shared my campaign with others.  I ask for your help once more in this final week of my campaign… please share this blog post with anyone you know, mention it to family and friends, send people to my website or Kickstarter campaign, and spread the word in any way you can.  I can't do it without your help!  A share is just as valuable as a financial contribution, and I won't reach the goal unless I have enough exposure to as many people as possible in the next few days.

THANK YOU so much for believing in my music!  It has been a humbling experience to see so much support, and I can't wait to share my new music with the world!

New website and Kickstarter campaign

Julie’s new website & Kickstarter campaign

Hello, and welcome to the relaunch of JulieBernsteinMusic.com! The new site includes a homepage webstore, since I get a lot of requests from people wanting to purchase physical CDs.

I’m also excited to announce the launch of my Kickstarter campaign! Kickstarter is a crowd-funding platform that helps artists like me fund their creative projects. Anyone who contributes is “pre-paying” for an album or package of rewards that I send out after the funding process is complete and the project is finished. On my Kickstarter page, you’ll see that there are many rewards / thank you packages on the right side of the window to choose from. So, if you make a pledge, you’re not just putting money into my project, you’re getting a lot in return!

Among the choices I’ve created, you can get signed copies of the new album before the official release, tickets for you and a guest to a pre-release listening party, writing a song together or recording a song of your choice for you, private concerts, and a worship weekend for your church including a mini-workshop with your entire music ministry.

My first album, Out of the Deep, was released two years ago, followed by my piano / vocal devotional album Awaken Me in 2012, and 2013 saw the release of another studio album, Fire In The Night Part 1. The Kickstarter campaign is for the follow-up, Fire In The Night Part 2, as well as to help with my tour of the Midwest coming up in July. I’ve funded half of what’s needed myself, and I have about three weeks left to raise the remaining $8000.

Every little bit helps, even a pledge of $1! You can also help tremendously by spreading the word, through sharing this blog post with others, or the details of my campaign through Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, other blogs, instant messages, or even a phone call to a family member or friend.

Thank you for your continued support! I appreciate everyone who has helped me along the way, and I’m so excited to share my new music with everyone, from the new album and the upcoming tour!

Here is the Kickstarter video, which explains all the details:

“In The Secret” live at FUMC benefit concert

In The Secret live at FUMC benefit concert

Here we are taking the stage and opening with a bit of Matthew 6 … “…but when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you…”

The Exodus / Fire In The Night

The Exodus / Fire In The Night

Around the time I was writing Fire In The Night, a friend of mine (Rebecca McEntire) came to me and said she felt really strongly that she was to do a painting of the Exodus (the Israelites leaving Egypt). She felt really strongly that her painting was to include several aspects / details of the Exodus including the pillar of fire at night, the hundreds of thousands of Israelites leaving Egypt, details of how their shoes didn’t wear out during their journey, how they plundered the Egyptians and were given clothes, gold, and silver.

So when I was getting ready to give my concerts for the release of my album, “Fire In The Night,” I asked Rebecca if she’d be willing to show her painting at my concerts. She got busy painting and brought in her almost finished, still-wet painting for my March 9th concert. Here are some pictures of her painting from my March 9th show: Read More...

Video of Julie Bernstein’s “Agnus Dei” live

Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi
(Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world)

As we enter holy week, sharing a video of my Agnus Dei seemed appropriate. I wrote this Agnus Dei several years ago when I wanted to make the singing of this traditional Latin text accessible to a broader corporate expression in the worship context. It opens with a choral rendition of the Latin: “Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi,” then breaks into a very repetitive chorus in English: “Lamb of God we praise Thee … You take the sins of the world. You’ve taken the sins of the world.” In this concert setting, the congregation joined in singing with us (which you can’t hear well in this video), but added to the rich expression of this song.

Julie’s “Help Me” at the Stop Hunger Now benefit

Help Me (from Psalm 91): benefit concert at First United Methodist Church

I premiered this song at this church / venue last March, so it was my pleasure to bring it back again this year especially now that it’s been recorded and is part of my newest EP, Fire In The Night. This song came while literally crying out to God on a particularly hard day with one word: “help.” Immediately the words from Psalm 91 started ‘coming’ as comfort and as reminders of where to find my solace and help. I end this song (Help Me) singing the name of Jesus repeatedly, leaning heavily into verse 14 of Psalm 91 where it says:

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him. I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name…”

Results from Stop Hunger Now benefit concert

Thank you to everyone who came out to my Stop Hunger Now benefit concert Saturday night at First United Methodist Church! The funds raised will go toward their food packaging event which will be held on March 30th. We raised $1163.11 (almost 25% of their goal) for Stop Hunger Now which will provide thousands of meals for the desperately hungry of this world. If you or your church would like more information on Stop Hunger Now or you would like to host a food packaging event, please visit their website.

Special thanks go to special guests Madi Vest (violin) and Angela Kelly (flute) for joining me as soloists for this concert, and also Rebecca McEntire, who shared her painting during Fire In The Night.

Julie’s “Psalm 45″ with bells, strings, & vocal ensemble

Psalm 45 is the song from this past year that is literally bursting on the inside of me. Exploding! actually. It ‘came’ while I was in the middle of recording my last album, Awaken Me, and is part of the ‘healing’ & ‘calling forth’ the Lord is doing in this songwriting season. Psalm 45 is listed in the bible as a wedding song and paints the picture of (what some have interpreted as) the preparation of the bride of Christ … the preparation of everything, really … for his return. My understanding of this psalm is continually unfolding as I dig deeper into it and sing it again and again. Read More...

String rehearsal for March 9th concert

Because I can’t make Psalm 45 big enough, I’m bringing in more strings for my upcoming concert on March 9th! And since we don’t have actual ‘light’ in our front room (aside from a tiny reading light affixed to my piano), we must rehearse by candle light. This truly makes for an aesthetically beautiful yet hazardous rehearsal time! (Watch your bow arms, girls).

I do encourage you to come March 9th, First United Methodist Church, Charlottesville VA, 8:00pm. Read More...

‘Hallelujah’ section of “It’s About Glory” video

The Hallelujah

This singing of the “hallelujah” comes at the end of my Christian worship / praise song “It’s About Glory,” a song written while I was sitting on the couch asking the Lord, “Why am I a musician? What is this all about? Why am I a worship leader? Why am I a songwriter? I didn’t set out to become a song writer. I didn’t even set out to become a singer! What is this all about?!?” Almost immediately the Lord began answering my questions and hi-lighting certain words: It’s about glory, and mercy. It’s about salvation, redemption … joining with the “holy holy holy…” and then he began to hi-light the word “hallelujah,” big time! I really got the sense that he wanted to revitalize the ‘hallelujah” or to renew the singing of the ‘hallelujah.” This video captures the final ‘hallelujahs’ of this song.

Julie’s next concert–FUMC’s Stop Hunger Now event

Inviting you to my next concert on Saturday, March 9th, 8:00PM at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Charlottesville, VA. This is a benefit concert for the church’s STOP HUNGER NOW food packing event. STOP HUNGER NOW is an international hunger relief organization whose main mission is to end hunger in our lifetime. Please come support this worthy cause!

I’m also excited to announce that my newest album, Fire In The Night, will be available for sale at this concert (now available on iTunes and Amazon). Fire In The Night references the story in Exodus where God reveals himself (his presence & leadership) to the Israelites as a “Pillar of cloud by day and a Pillar of fire by night.” In other words, the Israelites were never without his direction and leadership leaving Egypt. He was never not there! read more

I am so excited to bring this music to you all, and to help support FUMC’s food packing event!

New album “Fire In The Night” released!

Fire In The Night is released today on iTunes and Amazon! With a renewed confidence as a singer and songwriter, I am finding my ‘sound’ as I continue on this journey of music-making, giving my wholehearted YES to the Lord. The phrase Fire In The Night references the story in Exodus where God reveals himself (his presence & leadership) to the Israelites as a “Pillar of cloud by day and a Pillar of fire by night.” In other words, the Israelites were never without his direction and leadership leaving Egypt. He was never not there! The ‘fire’ and ‘night’ as it relates to this album paints a picture of the Lord revealing himself to me as a “Fire in the Night” … leading me out of an allegorical ‘Egypt‘ in the middle of the ‘night.’ The title track basically came in the middle of a literal night: “FIRE IN THE NIGHT, HERE I COME.” In essence, I am saying YES to the way and the where and the how the Lord will lead me in this songwriting season ~ which is how all of the songs on this album were written: with an ear & a heart bent towards heaven.

Midwest Tour

I’m happy to announce that I’ll be touring the Midwest this summer! Yes, I’m heading to the country (and to some cities too….) to give back to those who have so generously given to me over the years. We’re starting the tour at the little country church where I grew up, down the mile-long-still-gravel road … near my childhood home in the countryside of northern Illinois. It’s my joy and honor to ‘come back home’ and share with everyone! Read More...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year and welcome to 2013! I’m beginning this blog from the cold, cold, wintry tundra of northern Illinois where I grew up as a child. As I look back on 2012 and think ahead to a new year I’m reminded (because of my surroundings) of my humble beginnings in this little countryside: my little country school, the little country store, my little country church … and a rich, rich heritage of a lifetime of family, friends, farmland and a God that pursued me relentlessly, pursuing my very heart until I was completely & unmistakably His. Pictures from “Awaken Me” CD release concert

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who came out to my concert Friday. I was surrounded by richness on every side from the musicians who worked with me, to every member of the audience, to every volunteer serving behind-the-scenes. You are beautiful people! I was literally bursting with my new song, “Psalm 45,” which has become my anthem for 2012 and 2013. Be looking for a fuller studio version in the coming months. I believe the urgency I’ve been feeling to do this song is for “such a time as this.” Read More...

Rehearsal footage for Friday’s concert

Preparations have been well under way for my concert this Friday night (November 16th). I am literally ready to burst with these new songs! A few of them are on my new Awaken Me album, and the rest will be released in early 2013. I’m bringing in a dear friend of mine for this concert, flutist Angela Kelly, who will be playing on Fire in the Night, a new song that premiered earlier this year. Also, we have a mystery tenor arriving Thursday evening just in time for our dress rehearsal! Enjoy this rehearsal footage… You’ll see some familiar faces, as well as some new. Come on out this Friday night, 8pm at Christ Community Church.

Awaken Me: new release

Awaken Me, new Christian praise-worship music from Julie Bernstein

I’m getting close to the release date (surprise!) of my first devotional / worship album in response to a request that was made while I was recording my next studio album. Most of the tracks / songs on this devotional album come from time spent at my piano singing through the psalms or other portions of scripture, not setting out to ‘write’ or ‘craft’ a song … just singing through the scriptures. And this album portrays literally that: me at my piano singing as unto the Lord. This album is perfect for a personal devotional time, or for meditating on the scriptures being sung. There will be a limited number of these CD’s available at the Women’s Conference this weekend (November 9th & 10th) and also at my concert on November 16th. (But these concerts will surely NOT be unplugged!)

CDs available at the upcoming live events, iTunes / Amazon online release dates to be announced shortly.

November 16th, 2012 Concert

I would like to invite you all to my next concert, Friday November 16th, 8:00 at Christ Community Church in Charlottesville. I know it has been a while since my last concert, but I have been hard at work on plenty of new material. I will be sharing several of my new songs along with some favorites. Limited preview CDs of my new unplugged album will be available also.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

One year anniversary of Out Of The Deep

It’s been one year since the release of my debut album, “Out of the Deep,” and WOW! I’ve been overwhelmed with the love and support of so many people. Out of the Deep is so much more than an album to me. It’s a narrative, an account of me emerging from a place of weakness & hopelessness and into a place of strength, of something new & beautiful.

When I think back to what it took to produce this CD, I have to give testimony to the hand of God in it all. He truly showed himself strong in my weakness. I was so timid and ill-equipped to start (I didn’t even have a band!). My husband and I asked the Lord to ‘send a producer into our lap’ ~ a producer of His choosing for this project. We soon met Kevin McNoldy. Kevin was a rock to us. He patiently walked us through the entire process up to the release and beyond. The process of writing, connecting with our producer, submitting songs to him, recording, and giving concerts challenged and strengthened us in ways we never imagined possible. I am both strengthened and emboldened to continue on. And that’s a God thing! Hallelujah!

I’m still not sure what’s in store for 2013, other than lots more music! (writing, recording, & concerts!) I’m also excited about two new albums that will be coming out soon!
Stay tuned!

Battlefields, Football Fields, Marching Bands …

The 2Chronicles 20 battlefield is often on my mind … where Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, was informed of a vast army coming against him to make war … an army too powerful and too big for Jehoshaphat’s men to fight. After seeking the Lord, and declaring to the Lord, “WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO, BUT OUR EYES ARE UPON YOU,” Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord as they went out ‘ahead of the army’ (yes, the worshipers were at the head of the army, the front line). And here’s my favorite part: As they began to sing and praise him for the splendor of his holiness, the Lord set ambushes against those who were invading Judah and Judah’s enemies were defeated. Judah didn’t even have to fight or defend themselves with weapons!

As a worshiper in the house of God, I identify with this picture from 2Chronicles 20. But I also identify with this “marching onto the field” from my high school marching band days. And this is what sparked this blog entry.

Stepping outside in these early morning back-to-school-almost-autumn days reveals echoes of drum lines in the distance rehearsing ~ preparing for their time on the football field. It’s one of my all-time favorite sounds and as I linger long and listen, nostalgia grips me. And I find myself missing the grand-scale of sounds, of banners, of flags, of dancing, and of marching onto the field. And I want to re-create it! The phrase from Song of Solomon 6 rings through my spirit like a gong: “…majestic as an army with banners.”

And that is why you’ll see me using (or hoping to use!) auxiliary percussion in live shows and even on some recordings. I have this love of drum lines, you see…..

New song “Help Me” debuting at March 30th concert

I am so glad to be bringing a new song into the mix at this next concert at First United Methodist Church (March 30th, 2012). The name of the song is called “Help Me” and is based on Psalm 91. This song was written while I was praying a very simple yet heart felt prayer that went like this: “HELP.” In fact, the words for the song are taken almost word for word from a journal entry during that prayer time.

I did this song with my worship team for the first time a couple weeks ago and a good friend of mine said that this song is the most like ‘me’ out of the other songs I’ve written.

Also, I realize that the music behind the speaking in the video might be too much … too confusing. But when we ‘tried it out,’ we were amazed that my casual talking about the song lined up exactly with what the song was saying moment to moment. Have a listen! Read More...
