Sometimes as a songwriter, a song will come to you in bits and pieces, where you least expect them - this song came literally in the middle of the night, in the literal “middle of the night” as the phrase and melody “The fire burns… the fire burns …” When songs ‘start’ like this - when the Lord drops a song-phrase or theme in my spirit - I’ve learned to ask immediately of Him, “What are you wanting to teach me? Why are you highlighting this for me now? And what does this mean?” This phrase “the fire burns” also came during a crucial point in my faith-walk where I was learning more & more about finding complete security in the Love of the Lord.
These questions put me on a search of the scripture which led almost immediately to Song of Solomon 8:5-7 where it talks about a Love that burns like a blazing fire, like a mighty flame. (There is a love!!) Verse 7 says, “many waters cannot quench love, rivers cannot wash it away.” As I delved deeper into a study of God’s love, I found myself in the familiar passage of Romans 8 where we see the answer to the question, “what can separate us from the love of God?” In verse 38, Paul gives us the answer: “Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” There is a love … a love that burns like a blazing fire, a love that burns like a mighty flame that cannot be quenched: this describes the Love that God has for His beloved!
Here are the lyrics to “Seal.”
Verse 1 I’ll set You as a seal As a seal upon my heart A seal upon my arm For Your love is jealous Burning like a fire The fire burns The fire burns
Verse 2 I’ll set You as a seal As a seal upon my heart For Your love is jealous for me Unyielding as the grave The fire burns The fire burns
Response What can separate us from this Love What can separate us from this Love What can separate us from this Love What can separate us from this Love
The fire burns (waters can’t quench this Love) The fire burns (rivers can’t overwhelm)
